Pierrefiche

Pierrefiche is a small commune in the Aveyron department, located within the natural region of Aubrac, close to Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac. This mid-mountain area, sitting between 800 and 1,000 metres above sea level, is characterised by expansive grassy plateaux, traditional stone huts known as 'burons', and a landscape shaped by cattle farming, particularly the Aubrac breed. The region is well known for its cheese specialities, such as fourme d'Aubrac, and for aligot, a signature local dish. Pierrefiche lies just a few kilometres from the Way of St James (Le Puy route), which crosses the Aubrac plateau and draws walkers and pilgrims throughout the year. The climate features mild summers and harsh winters, making the area well suited to outdoor pursuits such as hiking, mountain biking and, in winter, cross-country skiing nearby. The local architectural heritage reflects traditional rural granite-built homes typical of this part of Aveyron. Nearby villages and natural sites across the Aubrac plateau offer opportunities for day trips to explore the distinctive volcanic and granite landscapes of the region.
