Verrieres

Verrières is a rural commune in the Aveyron department, in the southern Massif Central, at the heart of the Grands Causses area. This limestone landscape, characterised by karst plateaux, gorges and rugged terrain, lies within the Grands Causses Regional Nature Park. The region has long been associated with sheep farming, an activity that underpins the production of ewe's milk cheeses, including Roquefort, matured in the natural caves nearby. Traditional buildings here are typically constructed from local limestone, reflecting the architectural character of the Causses. The climate combines continental influences from the Massif Central with Mediterranean touches, bringing hot, dry summers and colder winters at higher altitudes. The surrounding countryside is well suited to outdoor pursuits, including walking along the causse trails, caving in the many karst cavities, and rock climbing on the limestone cliffs. With its low population density and well-preserved agropastoral landscapes, the area is valued for its tranquillity and unspoilt natural surroundings, typical of the vast open causse terrain found across the Aveyron region.
