Sauveterre de rouergue

Sauveterre-de-Rouergue is a medieval bastide town founded in 1281 by Alphonse de Poitiers, now listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Its grid-pattern layout, typical of Rouergue bastides, is centred on the arcaded main square, lined with timber-framed houses and stone covered walkways dating from the 13th to 15th centuries. The Notre-Dame church, along with several remains of the old fortified gates, reflect the town's defensive past. The village lies in the Ségala area, a hilly part of Aveyron known for cattle farming and local produce. The surrounding countryside offers pleasant walking and cycling routes through hedgerows, woodland and small streams. Sauveterre-de-Rouergue is about twenty kilometres from Rodez, making it a convenient base for exploring other bastides and characterful villages in the region. The local market and shops beneath the arcades add life to the historic centre.
