Conques en rouergue

Conques-en-Rouergue is a medieval village in the Aveyron department, in the Occitanie region of France, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Built on a hillside amid wooded valleys, it owes its renown to the Abbey Church of Sainte-Foy, a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France. The 12th-century tympanum depicting the Last Judgement and the treasury housing the Majesty of Sainte-Foy, a gold reliquary statue set with precious stones, are among its most notable features. The village remains a key stopover on the Via Podiensis (GR65), still welcoming pilgrims walking towards Santiago de Compostela. Its cobbled lanes lined with stone and timber-framed houses, topped with slate or lauze roofs, reflect a well-preserved architectural heritage. The surrounding countryside, shaped by the Dourdou gorges and the rolling landscapes of the Rouergue, is well suited to walking and hiking.
