Turquant

Turquant is a troglodyte village in the Loire Valley, located in the Maine-et-Loire department, close to Saumur and just a few kilometres from Fontevraud Abbey. The village is known for its dwellings carved into tuffeau, the local limestone, which has given rise to numerous cave dwellings and troglodyte homes still visible today. The white stone façades and slate roofs sit within a landscape of vine-covered hillsides, as Turquant lies at the heart of the Saumur-Champigny wine appellation. The village is listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, a label recognising its well-preserved architectural heritage and narrow lanes. The surrounding countryside is ideal for cycling, particularly along the Loire à Vélo route that follows the nearby river. Saumur's proximity provides easy access to its château and the National Riding School. The area also offers wine-related activities, with local producers offering tastings and tours of troglodyte cellars. The temperate climate of the Loire Valley makes it pleasant to explore the built and natural heritage throughout the year, whether on foot, by bike or by car.
