Mauges sur loire

Mauges-sur-Loire is a newly formed commune in the Maine-et-Loire department, created in 2016 through the merger of several villages, including Saint-Florent-le-Vieil, Montjean-sur-Loire and La Pommeraye. Located in the Mauges region, it lies along the River Loire, part of the Loire Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. The village of Saint-Florent-le-Vieil, set on a hilltop, is home to a former Benedictine abbey and offers a well-regarded viewpoint over the river. Montjean-sur-Loire retains traces of its river trade history, including old limekilns and a historic river port. The largely rural area is well suited to walking along the old towpaths and exploring the nearby vineyards of the Anjou wine region. The climate is oceanic, with mild summers and temperate winters. Angers, around thirty kilometres away, is easily reached for a livelier day out. Mauges-sur-Loire therefore makes a peaceful base for exploring the Loire Valley, combining river heritage, vineyard landscapes and unspoilt countryside, away from the busier tourist spots of the wider region.
