Bruyeres

Bruyères is a small town in the Vosges department, nestled at the foot of the Vosges mountains, just a few kilometres from Gérardmer and the scenic Route des Crêtes. Surrounded by fir forests and rolling hills, it serves as a popular starting point for hiking, mountain biking and, in winter, cross-country skiing, thanks to its proximity to the region's ski areas. The town holds a strong wartime legacy: it was liberated in October 1944 by the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a US Army unit made up of Japanese-American soldiers, an event still commemorated locally and which led to twinning ties with towns in Hawaii. Bruyères also has an industrial past rooted in textiles, with several mills that shaped its economic development during the 19th and 20th centuries. The town retains an authentic Vosges character, with traditional houses and a well-preserved natural setting. The surrounding area, dotted with lakes and valleys, appeals to nature lovers and those seeking green tourism, offering a good balance between rural tranquillity and easy access to the Vosges' main attractions.
