Fontevraud l abbaye

Fontevraud-l'Abbaye is a village in the Maine-et-Loire department, in Anjou, close to Saumur and the Loire Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is best known for the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud, one of the largest monastic complexes in Europe, founded in the 12th century and famous for housing the effigies of the Plantagenet dynasty, including Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart. The site, now a cultural centre, offers visits to its Romanesque architecture, cloister and distinctive octagonal kitchen. The village retains a peaceful character, with tufa-stone streets and a handful of shops, restaurants and a hotel housed within the former monastic buildings. The surrounding area is well suited to cycling along the Loire à Vélo route, as well as to exploring the Saumur-Champigny vineyards and the town of Saumur, renowned for its wines and troglodyte cellars. Fontevraud-l'Abbaye therefore serves as a cultural and heritage stop at the heart of the Loire Valley, appreciated for its tranquillity and proximity to the region's principal tourist sites.
