Distre

Distre is a small commune in the Maine-et-Loire department, in the Pays de la Loire region, located just a few kilometres from Saumur, of which it forms a rural, residential extension. The village lies within the Saumurois area, well known for its vineyards (Saumur, Saumur-Champigny) and its troglodyte heritage, with cave dwellings carved into the local tuffeau stone typical of the Loire Valley. The surrounding landscape features bocage countryside and vineyards, ideal for walking or cycling, including routes linking neighbouring villages along the Loire River. Its proximity to Saumur provides easy access to the town's château, the Cadre Noir national riding academy, and a lively centre with shops and restaurants. Distre itself remains primarily a quiet, residential spot, valued for its peaceful rural setting while still benefiting from the amenities and tourist appeal of nearby Saumur. The wider region is also known for its mushroom farms and local specialities, including Loire Valley wines and dishes featuring button mushrooms grown in the old tuffeau quarries nearby.
