Camares

Camarès is a village in the southern Aveyron department, in the Occitanie region of France, set on the banks of the Dourdou de Camarès river. It lies at the heart of the Rougier, an area known for its distinctive red Permian sandstone soil, which gives the surrounding landscape a striking colour that contrasts with the limestone plateaus nearby. The village retains a sense of history, with a medieval stone bridge spanning the river and traditional stone-built houses reflecting its rural heritage. Camarès makes a convenient base for exploring the wider area, situated between the Grands Causses Regional Nature Park and the foothills of the Cévennes, in a landscape of gentle hills well suited to walking, mountain biking and river fishing. The renowned Roquefort-sur-Soulzon, just a short drive away, offers the chance to learn about the production of the famous blue cheese. The climate here is broadly Mediterranean-influenced, with hot, dry summers and mild winters, typical of the southern Massif Central. The region offers an unspoilt rural setting, valued for its tranquillity and authenticity, away from the main tourist routes.
