La puisaye

La Puisaye is a natural region of Burgundy, spanning mainly across the Yonne, Loiret and Nièvre departments. This area of damp bocage countryside is characterised by numerous ponds, woodlands and hedgerow-lined meadows, forming a green, gently rolling landscape well suited to outdoor pursuits such as walking, cycling and fishing. The region is known for its long-standing stoneware pottery tradition, particularly in Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye, where ceramic craftsmanship has continued for centuries. Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye is the birthplace of the writer Colette, whose work often evokes the landscapes and atmosphere of this Burgundian countryside. The Château de Saint-Fargeau, a substantial pink-brick fortress, is one of the area's notable heritage sites. La Puisaye appeals through its unspoilt rural character, away from major tourist routes, making it well suited to peaceful stays focused on nature, local heritage and traditional crafts. The climate is temperate, with mild summers and cool winters, typical of central France.
