Saint-Philippe is a town in the wild south of Réunion Island, known for landscapes shaped by lava flows from the Piton de la Fournaise volcano, particularly near the hamlet of Le Tremblet. The vegetation here is especially lush, thanks to a humid climate and heavy rainfall. The area is home to the Mare Longue forest, a remnant of primary rainforest protected as a biological reserve, along with the Jardin des Parfums et des Épices, which showcases a collection of tropical plants and local crops such as vanilla. The Anse des Cascades, a former fishing harbour lined with coconut palms, is a popular spot for picnics and coastal walks, with the sea spray typical of this volcanic shoreline. The town also retains traces of its agricultural and maritime past, such as the Puits des Anglais well. Saint-Philippe appeals to hikers keen to explore trails leading towards the volcano or along the rugged coastline. The atmosphere remains calm and unspoilt, far removed from the busier resort towns on the island's west coast, offering a glimpse of Réunion at its most authentic.
