Saint-André is a town in the north-east of Réunion Island, set within a region shaped by sugar cane farming and home to a significant Tamil community, reflected in the Colosse Temple, one of the island's best-known Hindu places of worship. The town retains an authentic character, with traditional Creole houses alongside surrounding farmland. The coastline, exposed to the Indian Ocean, tends to be rocky and unsuitable for swimming, though it offers interesting views over the sea. The climate is tropical and humid, with heavier rainfall than on the west coast, as the town lies on the windward side of the island. The surrounding area is well suited to hiking towards the island's highlands, through tropical forest scenery and waterfalls. Nearby Bras-Panon, known for its vanilla production, and Saint-Benoît make it easy to extend a visit to this part of Réunion. Saint-André therefore offers an interesting cultural and agricultural stop for discovering a less touristy side of the island.
