Ste rose

Sainte-Rose is a town on the eastern coast of Réunion Island, at the foot of the Piton de la Fournaise massif, within postcode 97439. It is best known for the Notre-Dame-des-Laves church, where a 1977 lava flow famously stopped just short of the building, a notable episode in local history. The town extends towards the Grand Brûlé area, a vast expanse of successive lava flows from the still-active volcano, creating stark volcanic landscapes set against dense tropical vegetation. The Anse des Cascades, a coastal spot lined with coconut palms and waterfalls tumbling straight into the ocean, is a popular place for a stroll. The high rainfall in the area supports agriculture centred on lychees and vanilla, both traditional local crops. The road running through Sainte-Rose provides access to trails leading up towards the Piton de la Fournaise and viewpoints over recent lava flows. The environment remains shaped by the volcano's proximity, a humid tropical climate and rugged terrain typical of the island's windward coast. The town retains a rural, sparsely developed character, quite different from the more touristic areas on Réunion's west coast.
