Bassoues

Bassoues is a small village in the Gers department, in south-western France, between Auch and Tarbes. It belongs to the Plus Beaux Villages de France association, a label recognising its well-preserved architectural heritage. The village is dominated by its medieval keep, the remains of a fortified castle built for the archbishops of Auch, which reflects the region's feudal past. A timber-pillared market hall, typical of old Gascon marketplaces, adds to this historic character. The surroundings are rural and gently rolling, typical of Gascony, making it a pleasant spot for walking or cycling through farmland and quiet country lanes. The region is well known for its gastronomy, particularly foie gras, Armagnac brandy and farm produce, widely available at nearby local markets. Bassoues makes a peaceful base for exploring the Gers, with its fortified bastide towns, châteaux and rural charm, offering a calm, authentic alternative to busier tourist destinations.
