Saint-Clar is a former medieval bastide town nestled in the Lomagne area of the Gers department, in the Occitanie region of southwest France. Founded in the 13th century, it has preserved its distinctive layout, centred around a main square lined with covered arcades and a traditional wooden market hall typical of Gascon bastides. The village is known for its white garlic production, with a traditional market held regularly that draws local growers and visitors from across the region. The surrounding countryside, made up of gentle hills, farmland and quiet lanes, is well suited to walking and exploring local heritage, including Gascon pigeon towers and half-timbered houses. The mild climate throughout much of the year makes outdoor activities enjoyable across the seasons. Saint-Clar serves as a peaceful base for exploring the wider Gers area, close to other fortified bastide towns and villages, as well as local vineyards producing Côtes de Gascogne wine and regional specialities such as foie gras. Life here follows the unhurried pace typical of southwestern French villages, well away from mass tourism.
