Barran

Barran is a small village in the Gers department, in Occitanie, set in the heart of Gascony and crossed by the Baïse river. It is particularly known for its Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption collegiate church, whose octagonal bell tower is characteristic of the southern Gothic style typical of Toulouse, as well as for its old covered market halls, which reflect the local architectural heritage. The village retains a typical rural Gascon charm, with quiet lanes and a setting amid rolling countryside. The surrounding area is well suited to walking and cycling, offering the chance to explore nearby bastide towns and agricultural landscapes dotted with vineyards, some linked to Armagnac production. As the Gers is renowned for its gastronomy, foie gras, confits and other South-Western specialities are readily available, often sold at local markets. The mild, oceanic climate makes for pleasant stays across much of the year. Barran serves as a peaceful base for exploring the rural Gers, appreciating its understated Romanesque and Gothic heritage, and enjoying gentle tourism centred on nature, local produce and Gascon architecture.
