Gunsbach

Gunsbach is a village in the Haut-Rhin department, nestled in the Munster valley in Alsace, at the foot of the Vosges mountains. The village is best known for its connection to Albert Schweitzer, the physician, theologian and musician who grew up here and is buried in the local cemetery. His childhood home now houses a cultural centre and museum dedicated to his life and humanitarian work in Africa, while the parish church still holds the organ he helped restore. The setting is typically Vosges in character, with half-timbered houses, orchards and meadows surrounded by forest, ideal for walks towards the Petit Ballon or Hohneck peaks. The Munster valley, famous for its eponymous cheese, can easily be explored on foot or by bicycle from the village. Colmar, around twenty kilometres away, offers a historic old town and access to the Alsace Wine Route. Gunsbach makes a peaceful base for discovering the Vosges countryside and Alsatian cultural heritage, set within an unspoilt rural environment away from the region's busier tourist towns.
