Mertzen

Mertzen is a small village in the Haut-Rhin department, located in the Sundgau, a rural and gently rolling region of Alsace close to the Swiss border. The area is characterised by soft hills, woodlands, meadows and numerous ponds typical of the Sundgau landscape. The village retains a peaceful setting, shaped by traditional Alsatian architecture and a still-present agricultural activity. The Sundgau region is well known for its local gastronomy, particularly fried carp, a regional speciality served in several nearby establishments, as well as other local produce such as cheese and fruit brandies. Mertzen makes a convenient base for exploring surrounding villages, including Altkirch, the sub-prefecture of the Haut-Sundgau, or Ferrette, known for its medieval castle ruins overlooking the valley. Walking and cycling enthusiasts will appreciate the network of country paths winding through woods and ponds.
