Issenheim

Issenheim is a village in the Haut-Rhin department of Alsace, located near Guebwiller and Rouffach, along the Alsace Wine Route. The village is historically notable as the former site of the Antonite monastery, for which the celebrated Issenheim Altarpiece was created by Matthias Grünewald; this major work of late Gothic art is now housed at the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar, around twenty kilometres away. The village retains a rural, wine-growing character typical of the Alsace plain, with traditional half-timbered houses and vineyard surroundings ideal for walks. The region enjoys a semi-continental climate, with warm summers and plenty of sunshine, well suited to viticulture. Issenheim makes a convenient base for exploring the Alsace Wine Route, visiting nearby villages such as Guebwiller or Soultz, and venturing further afield to Colmar for its architectural and cultural heritage. Nature lovers will appreciate the proximity of the Vosges mountains, offering good hiking opportunities, while wine enthusiasts can discover local cellars and the typical Alsatian grape varieties grown in this part of the vineyard region.
