Bennwihr

Bennwihr is a village in the Haut-Rhin department of Alsace, set amid vineyards along the Alsace Wine Route, just a few kilometres from Colmar and Kaysersberg. Unlike neighbouring villages such as Riquewihr or Hunawihr, Bennwihr was almost entirely destroyed during the fighting of winter 1944-45 (the Colmar Pocket) and subsequently rebuilt in the following decades, giving it a more modern architectural character than its historic neighbours. The village remains surrounded by vine-covered slopes producing Alsace appellation wines, including Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris, and makes a convenient base for exploring the region's well-known picturesque towns, famed for their half-timbered houses and Christmas markets. The area enjoys a semi-continental climate, with warm, dry summers well suited to viticulture. Nearby, visitors can enjoy walks through the vineyards and onto the lower slopes of the Vosges mountains, as well as follow the scenic route linking the wine villages between Colmar and Ribeauvillé.
