Carspach

Carspach is a village in the Sundgau area of the Haut-Rhin department, near Altkirch, between Mulhouse and the Swiss border. The village is particularly known for its German military cemetery from the First World War, linked to the archaeological discovery of the so-called Devil's Trench, uncovered during works in the early 2010s, which revealed the remains of a collapsed military shelter. This site recalls the region's history during the conflict, as the Sundgau formed part of the front line. Beyond this historical significance, Carspach retains a typically rural character of southern Alsace, with traditional houses set amid rolling hills, woodland and meadows, ideal for walking and hiking. The Sundgau, often nicknamed the land of ponds, offers a peaceful setting for nature lovers and anglers alike. The nearby town of Altkirch provides shops and everyday services, while Mulhouse, around twenty kilometres away, offers a wider choice of cultural attractions, including its well-regarded technical museums.
