Hagenthal le bas

Hagenthal-le-Bas is a village in the Sundgau area of Haut-Rhin, on the southern edge of Alsace, close to both the Swiss and German borders and not far from Basel. The gently rolling landscape, dotted with orchards, meadows and small woodlands, is typical of this southern part of Alsace, less well known than the vineyards further north but valued for its quiet, authentic character. The village retains a number of traditional half-timbered houses characteristic of the region, along with a small local wine-growing tradition that is relatively unusual for the Sundgau. Its proximity to Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg EuroAirport makes it easy to reach for visitors travelling from further afield, while the surrounding countryside remains largely unspoilt. The area is well suited to walking and cycling, with paths linking neighbouring Sundgau villages through a mix of forest and farmland. The climate is semi-continental, tempered somewhat by the nearby Jura mountains and Swiss influences. Hagenthal-le-Bas makes a peaceful base for exploring rural Alsace, the Basel region and the nearby foothills of the Swiss Jura.
