Wahlbach

Wahlbach is a small village in the Haut-Rhin département, located in the Sundgau, a rural and hilly region in southern Alsace, close to the Swiss border and not far from Basel. The area is characterised by rolling hills, woodland and numerous ponds, a legacy of local fish-farming traditions, which are well suited to fishing and gentle walks. The Sundgau is also known for its traditional half-timbered villages and its peaceful, unhurried atmosphere, away from the main tourist routes. Walkers and cyclists will find a network of paths crossing countryside and forest, with views towards the Jura mountains on clear days. Regional cuisine, notably fried carp, a speciality traditionally served in local inns, adds to the area's appeal. The nearby towns of Altkirch and Ferrette offer shops, markets and a modest yet genuine historical heritage. Wahlbach therefore makes a quiet base from which to explore the Sundgau, enjoy the surrounding countryside and experience the calm, small-scale character typical of rural Alsatian villages.
