Cernay

Cernay is a small town in the Haut-Rhin department of Alsace, lying at the foot of the Vosges mountains at the entrance to the Thur valley, not far from Thann and Mulhouse. The town retains the Porte de Thann, a remnant of its medieval fortifications, which still marks its historic centre. Cernay is also the starting point of the Rhine tourist railway, a small steam train that runs through the Alsatian countryside towards Sentheim. The town lies close to the Vieil Armand (Hartmannswillerkopf), a significant First World War memorial site featuring a national cemetery and monument, drawing visitors interested in the region's wartime history. Cernay also serves as one of the southern gateways to the Alsace Wine Route, providing easy access to nearby wine villages and vineyard landscapes. The area's semi-continental climate, with warm summers and cool winters, suits outdoor pursuits such as hiking in the nearby Vosges.
