Altkirch

Altkirch is a small town in southern Alsace, in the Haut-Rhin department, perched on a plateau overlooking the Ill valley, close to the Swiss border and the Alsatian Jura mountains. Its town centre retains a medieval character, with cobbled streets, half-timbered houses and the Collégiale Saint-Morand, a notable religious landmark and part of the local heritage. The town is also home to the Musée Sundgauvien, which showcases the history and rural traditions of the Sundgau region, of which Altkirch is regarded as the capital. The surrounding countryside offers a green setting ideal for walks, with ponds, woodland and the gently rolling landscapes typical of this part of Alsace. Regional cuisine, featuring Alsatian specialities such as sauerkraut and tarte flambée, can be enjoyed in local restaurants and inns. Altkirch also serves as a convenient base for exploring the Sundgau's traditional villages and fishing ponds, as well as for day trips to Mulhouse, Basel or the Swiss border, roughly thirty minutes away by car. The town enjoys a semi-continental climate, with mild summers and cool winters, typical of the wider Alsace region.
