Oltingue

Oltingue is a village in the Sundgau area of the Haut-Rhin department, close to the Swiss border and around thirty kilometres from Basel. This rural, hilly and wooded region is known for its traditional half-timbered farmhouses, orchards and numerous ponds once used for fish farming, particularly carp, a local culinary speciality still found on menus in the area. The village is home to a museum dedicated to Sundgau rural heritage, showcasing traditional housing and farming customs. The peaceful, unspoilt surroundings appeal to walkers and cyclists, with a network of paths linking nearby villages and offering views over the Sundgau countryside and the foothills of the Alsatian Jura. Its proximity to Switzerland makes it easy to visit Basel, a city known for its museums and architecture. Oltingue therefore makes a quiet base from which to explore an authentic rural area, combining nature, regional food and traditional heritage, away from the busier tourist spots of Alsace's larger towns.
