Bergheim

Bergheim is a wine-growing village in the Haut-Rhin department, located in Alsace on the region's famous wine route, between Ribeauvillé and Sélestat. The village has retained parts of its medieval ramparts and several towers, including the Porte Haute, which marks the entrance to the historic centre. Cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses, the market square and its Renaissance well reflect a well-preserved heritage. Bergheim is also known for its old lime tree, said to have been planted around the year 1300, and for its history linked to 17th-century witch trials, commemorated by a memorial space within the village. The commune lies within the Alsace vineyards, with the Altenberg de Bergheim grand cru among the local appellations, making it a good base for cellar visits and tastings of regional white wines. The surrounding rural, gently rolling landscape, set among vines and the foothills of the Vosges, is well suited to walking and cycling, close to neighbouring villages such as Ribeauvillé and Riquewihr, both noted for their traditional Alsatian architecture and winemaking traditions.
