Orbey

Orbey is a small town in the Haut-Rhin département, set within the Vosges mountains in Alsace. Located in the Weiss valley, it spans a large area stretching from the valley floor up to the Vosges ridgeline, close to the Col du Bonhomme and the Lac Blanc and Lac Noir lakes. This setting makes it a popular base for hiking in summer and for downhill and cross-country skiing in winter, particularly around the Lac Blanc and Les Bagenelles ski areas. The area is dotted with traditional farm-inns, known locally as marcairies, where visitors can sample regional specialities such as farmhouse Munster cheese, Vosges-style tarts and traditional herdsman's meals. The natural surroundings include peat bogs, fir and beech forests, and viewpoints overlooking the Alsace plain and, at times, the Black Forest beyond. The Vosges climate is cooler and damper than the lowlands, ensuring reliable winter snow cover. Orbey retains a distinctly rural, mountain character, with scattered hamlets typical of Alsace's Vosges valleys.
