Ammerschwihr

Ammerschwihr is a wine-growing village in the Haut-Rhin department of Alsace, situated along the renowned Alsace Wine Route, just a short distance from Colmar and Kaysersberg. The village is particularly known for its vineyards, including the respected Kaefferkopf Grand Cru, one of the region's notable wine-growing sites. Heavily damaged during the fighting of the Liberation in 1944-1945, the village was rebuilt in the post-war years, resulting in a mix of preserved historic elements, such as the Porte Haute gateway, alongside more modern construction. Despite this, the village retains a distinctly Alsatian character, with half-timbered houses and flower-lined streets during the summer months. The surrounding landscape is shaped by rolling vineyards, ideal for walks and visits to local wine estates offering tastings and direct sales. The wider region is well suited to outdoor pursuits, from hiking through vineyard slopes and the foothills of the Vosges to exploring neighbouring Alsatian villages known for their architectural heritage.
