Soultzmatt

Soultzmatt is a wine-growing village in the Haut-Rhin département, nestled in Alsace at the foot of the Vosges mountains, at the entrance to the Vallée Noble, which it shares with the neighbouring villages of Osenbach and Wintzfelden. Crossed by the Ohmbach stream, the village lies within the Alsace vineyard region and along the Alsace Wine Route, with hillsides planted with grape varieties typical of the area. Soultzmatt is also known for its mineral water springs, which have been exploited locally since the 19th century. Nearby, the Schauenberg hill is home to a pilgrimage chapel dedicated to Our Lady, a site of Marian devotion for centuries and a starting point for wooded walks offering views over the valley. The village retains traditional Alsatian architecture, with half-timbered houses and quiet lanes. The surrounding area is well suited to walking and cycling, particularly towards the Vosges ridges and nearby wine villages. The semi-continental climate, drier than elsewhere in Alsace due to the foehn effect, favours vine cultivation. Soultzmatt makes for a peaceful base from which to explore the wine-growing and natural heritage of the Haut-Rhin.
