Mittelwihr

Mittelwihr is a wine-growing village in the Haut-Rhin département, nestled along the Alsace Wine Route between Beblenheim and Bennwihr, at the foot of the vineyards and the Vosges foothills. The village is known for its almond trees, planted on a south-facing slope, which blossom among the earliest in Alsace at the end of winter, creating a striking early-spring landscape. The local vineyards include part of the Mambourg grand cru, particularly noted for its Gewurztraminer wines. Mittelwihr was heavily affected by the fighting during the liberation of the Colmar Pocket in 1944-45, and a Sherman tank, known as “Le Verdun”, stands as a memorial to these events. Rebuilt after the war, the village retains a peaceful setting well suited to walking or cycling through the vineyards. Its central location makes it easy to explore nearby Riquewihr, Ribeauvillé and Kaysersberg, well-known towns along the Alsace wine trail, as well as Colmar, around fifteen kilometres away. The region's dry, sunny semi-continental climate makes it a favourable base for both wine-growing and holidays during the warmer months.
