Saulges

Saulges is a village in the Mayenne department, set in the Erve valley and known for its prehistoric caves, among the most significant sites in the region, including the Rochefort cave and the Margot cave, which bear witness to human occupation dating back to the Palaeolithic era. Awarded the label 'Petite Cité de Caractère', the village charms visitors with its limestone architecture, narrow lanes and the Romanesque chapel of Saint-Pierre-sur-Erve, one of the oldest in Mayenne. The River Erve, which flows through the area, provides an ideal setting for walking, fishing and nature-watching, while the surrounding limestone cliffs attract climbers and cavers alike. The Saulges prehistoric site, complete with an interpretive trail, offers insight into the area's geological and archaeological history.
