Pontmain

Pontmain is a small village in the Mayenne department, located on the borders of Brittany and Normandy, close to Fougères and Ernée. It owes its renown to the Marian apparition of 17 January 1871, recognised by the Catholic Church, which has since made it a place of pilgrimage. The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Pontmain, built at the end of the 19th century on the site of the apparition, is the village's main landmark and draws visitors and pilgrims from across France each year. A reception centre welcomes groups and hosts periods of reflection. Beyond its religious heritage, Pontmain retains the quiet charm of villages in the Mayenne bocage countryside, with its stone houses and unspoilt rural setting. The surrounding countryside is well suited to gentle walks amid meadows, hedgerows and small streams typical of this part of the Mayenne region. Though modest in size, the village's distinctive history gives it a particular identity among the rural communities of western France, combining spirituality with genuine countryside character.
