St lyphard

Saint-Lyphard is a village in the Loire-Atlantique department, set at the heart of the Brière Regional Natural Park, a vast area of marshland and canals between La Baule and Guérande. The village is known for its traditional thatched cottages, particularly in the restored hamlet of Kerhinet, which showcases typical Brière architecture with thatched roofs and whitewashed walls. The bell tower of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours church offers a panoramic view over the surrounding marshes, giving visitors a real sense of the scale of this protected wetland landscape. The area is well suited to exploring by traditional flat-bottomed boat (known locally as a blin or chaland), once used for reed cutting and eel fishing, both historically significant local activities. Saint-Lyphard makes a convenient base for visiting the Guérande salt marshes and the Atlantic coast around La Baule, roughly a twenty-minute drive away. The village retains a distinctly rural character, with several walking trails crossing heathland and wetland areas, ideal for birdwatching and discovering the local biodiversity of the Brière park.
