Donges

Donges is a town in the Loire-Atlantique department, located on the northern bank of the Loire estuary, between Saint-Nazaire and Nantes. It is best known for its oil refinery, one of the largest in France, established along the river since the 1930s and a defining feature of the local industrial landscape. By contrast, the Donges marshes form an extensive protected wetland, valued for its ecological significance and its role as a stopover for migratory birds, offering opportunities for walking and birdwatching. The town centre retains a residential character, with local shops and a market. Its position on the estuary provides easy access to marinas and river-based activities, while the proximity of Saint-Nazaire, with its shipyards, and Nantes makes it a convenient base for exploring the wider region. The climate is oceanic, mild and humid, with temperate summers. Donges is particularly notable for the contrast between its industrial setting and the unspoilt natural spaces bordering the Loire.
