Montreal-du-Gers

Montreal-du-Gers is a bastide town founded in 1284, set on a hilltop in the Gers department of Occitanie, not far from Condom. Its geometric layout, typical of Gascon bastides, is arranged around an arcaded square and a covered market hall, with narrow streets offering sweeping views over the Gers valley and, on clear days, towards the Pyrenees. About two kilometres away lies the Gallo-Roman site of Séviac, where the remains of an ancient villa and its well-preserved mosaics can be visited. The village lies on a variant of the Via Podiensis, a historic route of the Way of St James, making it a popular stopover for walkers. The surrounding countryside, straddling the Armagnac and Ténarèze areas, is known for its Armagnac brandy, Côtes de Gascogne wines and foie gras, all of which feature at local markets. The mild, sunny Gascon climate encourages walking and cycling through the rolling countryside for much of the year. Montreal-du-Gers therefore makes a peaceful base for exploring the rural and gastronomic heritage of the Gers region.
