Arnay le duc

Arnay-le-Duc is a small town in the Côte-d'Or department of Burgundy, situated roughly halfway between Beaune and Autun, on the edge of the Morvan and Auxois areas. The town is known for having been the childhood home of the military engineer Vauban, whose legacy is still reflected in the local heritage. The town centre retains old covered market halls, the Saint-Laurent church and remnants of its medieval past, including castle ruins. Nearby, the Étang de Fouché offers a lake set up for swimming and water activities, popular for its green surroundings and family-friendly atmosphere. The larger Lac de Panthier, a few kilometres away, adds further outdoor options such as pedal boats, walking paths and dining along the Burgundy Canal, which also runs through the area and is well suited to cycling or boat trips. The surrounding countryside, typical of the Auxois hedgerow landscape and Burgundy's rolling hills, is ideal for walking and exploring authentic rural villages. Arnay-le-Duc therefore serves as a quiet base for discovering a rural corner of Burgundy, combining modest local heritage with unspoilt nature, within easy reach of the region's better-known attractions.
