Pontigny

Pontigny is a village in the Yonne department, in Burgundy, best known for its Cistercian abbey founded in the 12th century. Pontigny Abbey, the second daughter house of Cîteaux, houses one of the largest surviving Cistercian abbey churches in France, notable for the austere elegance of its Romanesque and early Gothic architecture. The village lies along the Serein, a small river running through the commune, offering a peaceful setting well suited to gentle walks. Pontigny sits around fifteen kilometres from Auxerre, the department's main town, and not far from the Chablis vineyards, celebrated for their dry white wines made from Chardonnay grapes. The surrounding countryside, with its vineyards, woodland and farmland, makes for pleasant exploration of Burgundy's religious and wine heritage. The climate is semi-continental, with warm summers and cool winters typical of inland France.
