Cheu

Cheu is a small rural commune in the Yonne department, in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region, close to Joigny and not far from Auxerre. The area is characterised by rolling countryside typical of Burgundy, combining farmland, meadows and copses, with the Yonne valley running through it. The region is renowned for its winemaking heritage, notably the Chablis and Auxerrois vineyards located a short distance away, as well as its limestone-built villages typical of northern Burgundy. The surrounding countryside offers opportunities for walking and cycling along rural lanes, along with the chance to explore neighbouring villages with their Romanesque and Gothic churches. Nearby Joigny boasts a historic centre with timber-framed houses and interesting medieval heritage worth visiting. Local gastronomy follows Burgundian tradition, featuring cheese, charcuterie and, of course, regional wines. Cheu therefore makes for a peaceful base from which to explore this part of the Yonne, combining unspoilt nature with Burgundian cultural heritage, within reasonable reach of Paris and major road routes.
