Nevers

Nevers, the county town of the Nièvre department, lies at the confluence of the Loire and Nièvre rivers in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. The town is well known for its faience pottery, a craft tradition dating back to the 16th century and still visible in several workshops and at the Frédéric-Blandin municipal museum. The historic centre, awarded Town of Art and History status, includes the Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte Cathedral, the Ducal Palace and the Porte du Croux, a remnant of the old town walls. Nevers is also known for the Saint-Bernadette Chapel at the Saint-Gildard Convent, where the body of Bernadette Soubirous, associated with the Lourdes apparitions, is preserved. The Loire riverside offers pleasant walks, particularly along the Quai des Éduens. Nearby, the Nevers Magny-Cours circuit, a former Formula 1 venue, now hosts various car and motorcycle racing events. Local specialities include négus, a caramel and chocolate sweet, alongside regional ham and cheese dishes. The area enjoys a temperate semi-continental climate, with warm summers and mild winters, well suited to cultural visits and outdoor activities along the rivers.
