Clamecy

Clamecy is a small town in the Nièvre department, in Burgundy, located at the confluence of the Yonne and Beuvron rivers, close to the Nivernais Canal and the Morvan Regional Nature Park. Its history is closely tied to timber floating, which supplied Paris with firewood from the Morvan forests until the 19th century, a heritage still recalled in several parts of the town. The old town retains timber-framed houses and picturesque lanes around the Collegiate Church of Saint-Martin, a flamboyant Gothic building whose tower overlooks the town. Clamecy is also the birthplace of writer Romain Rolland, commemorated by a dedicated museum. The Yonne river and the Nivernais Canal offer opportunities for walking and cycling, as well as fishing and canoeing. The surrounding countryside, a mix of hedgerowed farmland and Morvan woodland, is well suited to hiking and touring in a quiet, rural setting. The town retains a typical provincial Burgundian atmosphere, with a local market and small shops. Clamecy makes a convenient base for exploring the Morvan and the river heritage of the Nièvre.
