La charite sur loire

La Charité-sur-Loire is a small town in the Nièvre department, in Burgundy, set on the banks of the Loire River. It is best known for its former Cluniac priory, the Church of Notre-Dame, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela. This Romanesque building, one of the most significant examples of Cluniac architecture in France, overlooks the historic heart of the town, with its cobbled lanes, old houses and remaining fragments of the town walls. The town is also known for its many bookshops, which have earned it the nickname 'town of books', drawing second-hand booksellers and literature enthusiasts. The bridge over the Loire offers open views of the river and the rooftops of the old town. The riverside is well suited to walking and cycling, notably along the Loire cycle route that passes through the town. The surrounding area, known for the Pouilly-sur-Loire and Sancerre vineyards, adds further interest to this stop combining religious heritage, literary culture and Loire Valley landscapes.
