Fenis

Fénis is a small municipality in the Aosta Valley, north-west Italy, best known for its medieval fortress, the Castello di Fénis, one of the most celebrated and best-preserved castles in the region. Built from the 13th century onwards by the Challant family, it stands out for its picturesque architecture, double crenellated walls and an inner courtyard decorated with frescoes, including a notable depiction of Saint George slaying the dragon. The village sits at the foot of the Alps, surrounded by vineyards, chestnut groves and meadows typical of the Aosta valley floor. The climate is alpine, with cold, snowy winters that support winter sports in nearby resorts, and mild summers ideal for hiking along the surrounding mid-mountain trails. Fénis lies just a few kilometres from Aosta itself, making it a convenient base for exploring the valley, its other castles and local produce such as fontina cheese and mountain wines. The overall atmosphere remains rural and peaceful, well away from the busier alpine tourist resorts.
