Beaumont de lomagne

Beaumont de Lomagne is a medieval bastide town in the Tarn-et-Garonne department, founded in the 13th century in the Lomagne region, between Toulouse and Auch. The town is known for its large central square lined with arcaded walkways, and above all for its timber-framed market hall, one of the largest of its kind in France, a reminder of its trading past. Beaumont de Lomagne is also the birthplace of mathematician Pierre de Fermat, commemorated by a statue on the main square. The local economy remains rooted in agriculture, particularly the cultivation of Lomagne white garlic, which holds protected geographical status and takes pride of place at the weekly market. The town retains a charming mix of half-timbered houses and narrow lanes typical of Gascon bastides. The surrounding countryside, gently rolling and rural, is well suited to walking and cycling, with easy access to neighbouring villages in the Lomagne and Gers areas. The climate is temperate oceanic, with warm summers ideal for outdoor stays. Toulouse is within easy reach for day trips, offering a blend of rural tranquillity and access to a major regional city.
