Montauban

Montauban, the county town of Tarn-et-Garonne, is known for its distinctive pink brick architecture, particularly around Place Nationale, a lively arcaded square lined with cafés and shops at the heart of the old town. The River Tarn runs through the city, spanned by the medieval brick Pont Vieux, which offers fine views over riverside paths popular for walking and cycling. Montauban is also the birthplace of the painter Ingres, whose works are displayed at the Musée Ingres-Bourdelle, housed in the former bishop's palace by the river. The classical Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Cathedral adds to the town's religious heritage. The covered market, held several times a week, showcases local produce from the surrounding Quercy and Gascony countryside. Nearby, the rolling countryside of Tarn-et-Garonne is dotted with orchards and vineyards, including around Moissac, well known for its chasselas grapes. The region's mild, sunny climate for much of the year makes it well suited to outdoor pursuits, from riverside strolls to exploring the town's green spaces.
