Auvillar

Auvillar is listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, perched above the Garonne valley in the Tarn-et-Garonne department. A historic stop on the Way of St James (Via Podiensis), it retains notable architecture centred on the Place de la Halle, a circular square lined with arcades and half-timbered or brick houses, with a triangular-framed 19th-century grain market at its heart. The Clock Tower, a remnant of the former castle, marks the entrance to the village and offers views over the river. Auvillar was also once a busy river port and a centre for pottery and faience production, a heritage now recalled by a museum dedicated to traditional crafts and local ceramics. The village's quiet cobbled lanes make for pleasant strolls through this piece of south-western French rural heritage. The surrounding countryside, shaped by Gascon hills and farmland, offers walks along the Garonne and easy access to nearby bastide towns.
