Villeneuve

Villeneuve is a village in the Aveyron department, in the Occitanie region of southern France, located a few kilometres from Villefranche-de-Rouergue. Founded in the Middle Ages as a bastide town, it retains traces of its fortified past, including a former priory and remnants of its defensive walls, reflecting its medieval layout. The village sits within a typical rural landscape of the Rouergue area, amid valleys and limestone plateaux known as causses, ideal for walking and exploring local stone architecture. The surrounding region is shaped by traditional farming, particularly sheep rearing linked to cheese production, including Roquefort, matured in the natural caves of the nearby causses. The climate, a mix of oceanic and continental influences, brings warm summers and cool winters, well suited to outdoor pursuits such as hiking and cycling. Villeneuve offers a peaceful base for discovering Aveyron, with its characterful villages, natural sites of the Grands Causses, and neighbouring bastide towns, all set within a calm, unspoilt environment away from the busier tourist routes.
