Najac

Najac is a medieval hilltop village in the Aveyron department, in the Occitanie region, overlooking a tight bend of the Aveyron river. The village is dominated by its 13th-century royal fortress, one of the largest in southern France, whose keep offers wide views over the surrounding valley. The main street, lined with old arcaded and timber-framed houses, retains the authentic character typical of the fortified villages and bastides of the Rouergue area. The Church of Saint-Jean, dating from the 13th century, adds to the village's historic fabric. Najac is also known for a local speciality, the fouace, a traditional brioche-style bread sold by local bakers. The surrounding countryside, made up of wooded hills and gorges, is well suited to walking, cycling and canoeing on the Aveyron river. The village is listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, drawing a moderate number of visitors, particularly in summer. The climate is a modified oceanic type, with warm, dry summers and mild winters, making it suitable for outdoor stays for much of the year.
