Villefranche de rouergue

Villefranche-de-Rouergue is a medieval bastide town founded in 1252 by Alphonse de Poitiers, located in the Aveyron department at the confluence of the Aveyron and Alzou rivers. Its historic centre is built around the large Place Notre-Dame, lined with arcades and half-timbered houses, where a traditional market still takes place. The collegiate church of Notre-Dame, with its striking Gothic bell-tower porch, overlooks the square and serves as one of the town's main landmarks. Nearby, the Chartreuse Saint-Sauveur, a 15th-century monastery, reflects the town's religious heritage and is partly open to visitors. The town retains the grid-like street layout typical of south-western French bastides, with charming narrow lanes throughout. The surrounding countryside, hilly and crossed by rivers, is well suited to walking and exploring nearby villages such as Najac and Villeneuve-d'Aveyron, with reasonably easy access to Conques. The wider region is also known for its local gastronomy, including tripoux and other Aveyron specialities. Villefranche-de-Rouergue thus makes for a worthwhile cultural and heritage stop in the heart of the Rouergue area.
